Skies have a huge impact on a painting, sometimes taking up a large amount of the paper, and dramatically affecting the mood and atmosphere of the work. The sky should be considered carefully when planning a painting. In this class, led by Spokane artist Megan Perkins, students will tackle painting the sky – with clouds, mist, full of color, or as a neutral backdrop with a focus on being expressive and allowing the medium of watercolor to do its magic.
Big Skies with Megan Perkins Supply List
Watercolors (tube paint preferred but doable with pan paint), brushes (big brushes recommended. Princeton Snap brushes are recommended if you don’t have any big brushes. Get at least a 12 and a 20 wouldn’t be too big), paint palette (no skimpy little things here!), paper towels, cups to hold water, pencil, eraser, scratch paper for drawing out composition, watercolor paper and/or watercolor sketchbook. 90 lb watercolor paper can be used to warm ups and practices but 140 lb watercolor holds water better for big dramatic skies for when the student feels comfortable to try for a more finished piece.
Painter’s tape is needed and a water-resistant board to tape the paper to would be helpful, otherwise students can tape the paper to the table and I’ll bring a couple of my own boards for students to try.
